My name is Matthew Roddy, and I was born and raised in Chicago, and lived there most of my life. But as a young child, I spent three summers on a farm in southern Ohio, summers that instilled a deep love and respect for country living. So 16 years ago (with my wife's full support) I set off on my birthday to find our place in the country.
Driving down the lane in the dead of winter, I knew this was it before I even saw the house. It's the center picture above, and that's my son fishing. I really do have a green heron that comes every summer, and I have rainbow trout in my spring-fed pond.
We're in the "Driftless Region" of SW Wisconsin. They tell me it was formed when the glaciers missed the area along the Mississippi River. We've got hills and streams, and bluffs, and lots of wide open spaces in between. Google earth the area and you'll see what I mean.
Ten acres and a fixer-upper house will cost you about 100 grand. Taxes should be under $2000 per year, and as Visa says, the "memories are priceless". The skies are dark at night, and there sure are a lot of stars.
We only moved here two years ago, when our youngest daughter went to college, and the housing market collapsed around me in Chicago. But I know and love the area, and have already developed a lot of local connections.
The prettiest places don't come open very often, so I will be on the lookout. Fill out my form and we'll keep in touch. Have you ever driven three hours to see a place that's supposedly "off the road", and the windows rattle as the semis tear by? Not much better than the "freshly rehabbed" that should have been labeled "fixer-upper".
